The Various Perceptions of Sexuality in Society

Sexuality is a topic that is well talked about across the world, especially the United States. Although some people may just look at sexuality as just sexual actions, there are much more categories within this broad term. The scale ranges from gender and sexual orientation all the way up to rape. There are many issues in today's society revolving around this topic. Some include sexual orientation, the exposure of sexuality to children, and teen pregnancy.
Sexual Orientation will always be a topic that is addressed quite harshly throughout the country. There are many ongoing battles throughout America that are about whether or not people of the same sex should be able to marry one another. The definition of sexual orientation is a person's romantic and emotional attraction to another person. The definition does not state that it must be a member of the same sex. In my opinion, people cannot control their feelings on who they like or are attracted to. A person should not have to feel different if they are homosexual. I have come in contact with this issue in my family. I have an Aunt who is a lesbian and has been ridiculed her whole life for liking girls. She is often called "butch" and has many other nicknames that have been given to her. For the past 15 years she has been with the same woman and all she wants to do is get married, but in order to do that she would have to go to another state. Since the gay rights movement has started she now has hope that hopefully she will be able to marry the love of her life without having to move to a different location.
Another issue in society that relates to sexuality is the fact that young children are being exposed to it. The children are starting to watch inappropriate TV shows and movies that are feeding them the wrong ideas on how they should be living their lives. For example, the very popular Miley Cyrus, also known as Hannah Montana, has been doing many nude photo-shoots and music videos. According to Chris Georg, the show "Hannah Montana" dropped its ratings extremely fast after her first photo-shoot. My view on this is that children and young teens have access to the internet meaning that they can see all of these pictures and videos. When I was younger I wanted to be just like my favorite movie stars. With that being said, the children are being influenced by the media in a negative way.
Finally, teen pregnancy is an issue that has been even bigger recently in the United States. According to Micheal Snyder, the rates of teen pregnancy are the highest that they have ever been. To back this statement up, it is nearly impossible to walk around campus or a high school without seeing a teenager who is pregnant. While in high school, there were about 8 girls in my graduating class that were pregnant or had kids my senior year. Whats more shocking to me is that when Tyra Banks did a survey one of the results was that one in five teenage girls say they want to be pregnant. One of my close friends just found out she was pregnant and when she told me she seemed more excited than worried. I am of course happy that she is happy, but I feel like the teenage years are the ones to have fun and not raise a child. With this issue overall though is that as long as the mother is ready for the commitment then it will all work out in the end.
Overall, sexuality is such a broad topic that can be talked about for days on end. The issues within the term have caused many debates and in fact some riots throughout the US based on beliefs. This topic is one that I found the most interest in and have enjoyed reading many different articles based on different views.
