SOCIAL INTERACTION
Social
interaction makes up a substantial amount of today’s society. Without social
interaction, no one could communicate with one another. Sociologist R.J.
Rummell defines social interaction as the acts, actions, or practices of two or
more people mutually oriented towards each other’s selves. Some examples of
this best related to us student’s would be calling our parents back home to
check in, or having a conversation in the halls of Dusable.
Many
things go unnoticed when discussing everyday social interaction. These unnoticed
things consist of gender, class, race, and many others. These are all different
ways in which people can be seen. When someone meets someone for the first
time, it is usually because the two have at least one of these in common. For
example, a boy student that is in 3rd grade will most likely first interact
with another boy student unconsciously. Another example for the same boy is
that being enrolled in that school probably means that both boys are coming
from the same class. All of these things
happened for these two to interact. Now this type of interaction is much easier
to break in college, it is still well represented. After your first year of college,
chances are the other students you interact with are going to be of the same
gender, class, and race.
