Culture in our Society

Ever since the first civilizations emerged, culture has helped shape different societies. In chapter 3 culture is defined as the way that people think, act, and their material objects that help define who they are. Unlike most other countries the United States is not just made up of one culture. The great thing about the United States is the numerous cultures that come together. According to livescience.com "The United States is sometimes described as a 'melting pot' in which different cultures have contributed their own distinct 'flavors' to American culture." The effects of these various cultures aren't only seen in the United States, they can  be seen all around the world.

I think one of the main things to remember about the different cultures is not to make assumptions about them. Just because a person is part of a certain culture they do not necessarily associate with everything that culture does.  There are so many things, including a person's culture, that make them who they are. A person's values and beliefs can be influenced by not only their culture, but also their religion or the society they are living in. Many different characteristics define what a culture has to offer. They include things like language, clothing, and artifacts.

Culture plays an important role in who a person is. Personally culture has influenced my life. I speak two languages other than English that are connected to my culture. When attending weddings or other celebrations I wear my traditional clothing. Even though I live in the United States, speaking another language or wearing traditional clothing helps me feel connected to the people who share the same culture as me.

In the end, I think this quote from theworldandi.com sums up the value of cultural diversity in the United States "Each culture provides its own special and irreplaceable contribution to our understanding of America today..." The United States is the only country in the world where so many people from so many backgrounds come together bringing with them their own beliefs, values, hopes, and cultures.

The following picture shows the definition of fashion in various cultures.
