Time has shown that complete
acceptance might be just around the corner for different sexualities. We live in a world where there are many opinions, some accepting and others not so much, about people who go against the norm and follow their heart. Four of the main sexualities are
heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, and lastly asexual. The most common being
heterosexual which is when one is attracted to the opposite sex, this being the norm in society. But it is obvious when looking at the world today verses 20 years ago how recent generations have opened their minds to the idea of always going along with what people expect of you. The next there is homosexual this is where the individual is attracted to a person of the same sex; sometimes a person of this sexuality is known as gay. Bisexual is where the person is attracted to both genders man and female, and lastly asexual is when there is a lack of attraction to either of the sexes. There are 3 other sexuality's that the book did not cover but are more on the uncommon side, those three are poly-sexual, pan-sexual and transsexual.
I feel most people know at least a few individuals who consider themselves a different sexuality other than heterosexual. Personally I have a few friends that consider themselves gay and although I have not witnessed them be discriminated against I am sure it has happened to them. One of my friends from childhood came out and was officially public with his sexuality during his high school years. I know it was difficult for him because he was catholic, and went to a private catholic school from kindergarten through grade 8. He was very involved in his church and when the older members of the church found out his sexuality he was not allowed to return to the church. With the church being so closed minded and kicking him out it was crucial that his family stand by his side. Without the support of his family and friends he would have been a different person today.
One of the main controversial topics through the aspect of sexuality is, what gives us a sexual orientation? There are two different opinions, some believe that society shapes out sexuality while others think that it is in their biology a.k.a. they were born that way. The opinion that I believe to be true is that it is in the individuals biology. From talking to people of the different sexualities the majority of people from the other groups mainly say that they have felt that way since birth and have known for longer than they can remember. Also going outside of the norm can be hard. Why would an individual chose to go outside of the norm and make their life harder if they could just feel natural living the common life? Sexuality and acceptance have evolved greatly in the recent decades but still has some work to do.
